The Best Christmas Reads for Families - Guest Post | Blogmas Day 12

For today's blogmas, I'd like to welcome Cora from Tea Party Princess, sharing some perfect Christmas books!

There's nothing I love more about December than the nights drawing in. Why? Because long dark nights mean more time indoors, which means more time for reading. These are my favourite books to read with my family in the run up to Christmas.

V&A: The Twelve Days of Christmas

This book is one of the most beautiful books I have ever laid my hands on. It is genuinely exquisite, and even holding something so beautiful makes it all the more special to read.
My nephews love trying to sing along with The Twelve Days of Christmas, even if they haven't managed to master anything beyond FIVE GOOOOLD RINGS yet, and it's a sneaky way to get them to practice counting while having fun.
Beyond being fun and educational for toddlers, it's a joyful little book that the whole family can enjoy together, and I often pick it up and flick through for the illustrations from Liz Catchpole and William Morris alone.

The Christmasaurus by Tom Fletcher

This book is such a fun adventure, and I love how Christmassy it is. We start reading this in November to build up the excitement, a chapter a day, My nephews absolutely love it, every whimsical little thing, and they laugh their way through the story. They love talking about it too.
It did prompt a little discussion about how not all children have mummies, which my nephews found a little difficult to get their heads around as they have two mummies. "Aunty Gaga, I'm glad I have two mummies." And they decided that they would share their advent calendars with their mums.

Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild

If I could read one children's book for the rest of my life, I would probably pick this.
I absolutely adore the Fossil sisters, and from my nephew's first Christmas (even though he couldn't understand *any* of it being only two months old) I have read to him about all of the adventures and hardship they go through. They think it's great fun, that the sisters have a marvelous time, and wish for sisters of their own. We all have a lot of fun and huge smiles on our faces.
